HOW TO AVOID GMOs

True Food Website

Are you a parent?
You should be
concerned
about
GMOs in your kids'
school lunch.

GMOs = Genetically Modified Organisms

SCHOOLS AND GMOs

Fortunately, even a small group of concerned parents can have an impact on school policies around food and health.

Find out when school board meetings are held and how to get the issue of the school's food service on the agenda. Do some research before the meeting. Find out what company manages the school's cafeteria.

It might be helpful to communicate with the company before bringing the issue up to the board, so you'll know what to expect from them. Send the food service company a note requesting information about the foods they use in your child's school.

Ask them:
1) Are the foods used in my child's school lunches made from genetically engineered ingredients or products derived from engineered foods?
2) Will your company provide my child with food from non-GMO sources?

If you learn that the company has no policy against using GMO food, take the issue to the school board. A letter will be most effective if signed by a number of parents, so enlist as many others as possible and then take action!

FIVE STEPS TO TRUE FOOD

1

Buy whole foods.
Buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
Use whole grains, beans, seeds and nuts.

2

Support local, family farms.
Shop at farmers' markets.
Ask your grocer to stock local produce.

3

Buy organic.
Organic production excludes GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).

Ask your grocer for organic products.

4

Support companies that avoid GMOs.
Check updated list of responsible companies in Internet

5

Avoid processed foods containing soy, corn, canola or cotton.
These are the most widely grown GMO crops. They are often used as animal feed and as ingredients in processed foods. Check labels and avoid these products when you can!
